Polished Concrete Floor Maintenance Do’s and Don’ts
Do
- Since dirt and debris act as an abrasive on polished concrete floors, it’s crucial to keep floors clean daily with a dust mop. This simple step keeps floors shining longer while protecting them for long-term reliability.
- Use walkway floor mats at building entrances to reduce the amount of dirt and chemicals tracked onto floors throughout the day. Properly maintaining and cleaning these entryway mats maximizes their effectiveness.
- Prevent rainwater from collecting and settling on the floor, as it can be acidic and etch polished concrete floors.
- When moving heavy furniture, appliances, or equipment, lift them off the ground instead of dragging them across the floor.
- Use pads under any rolling chairs.
- When applying tape to floors, only use 3M Blue Painter’s Tape and limit application to two hours.
- Only use rugs that allow vapors to pass through them or rugs with a waffle-like backing on indoor flooring systems.
Don’t
- Never apply sealers or waxes to polished concrete floors. If your floors have lost their luster, contact Ardor Solutions to schedule a re-burnish.
- Never use ammonia, bleach, Mop & Glow, Pine-Sol, Lysol, or citrus-based products on polished concrete floors.
- Do not use a Swiffer WetJet-style cleaning tool on polished concrete, since the liquid in these devices contains trace amounts of solvents.
- Do not apply tape to polished, colored, or stained concrete for any length of time (see the note above for the one exception to this rule).
- Do not place potted plants directly on polished concrete floors. Instead, use a plant dolly or stand with legs to allow for ventilation between the planter and the floor surface. Otherwise, white mineral deposits may develop over time and permanently discolor the surface.
- Never allow plant fertilizers to come into contact with polished floors.
- Do not use rubber-backed mats on polished or decorative concrete floors. As a porous material, concrete emits vapors that must be allowed to evaporate naturally. Rubber-backed mats trap those vapors, resulting in hard mineral buildup, which is difficult, if not impossible, to remove without discoloration.

- Dilution Ratio: General Cleaning – 1 ounce of ARMOUR Concrete Cleaner & Conditioner per gallon of water (7.8 ml/liter)
- Poultice Method: 4 oz. of ARMOUR Concrete Cleaner & Conditioner per gallon of water (31.2 ml/liter)
Directions for Use
- First, remove any debris from the area to be cleaned.
- ARMOUR Concrete Cleaner & Conditioner can then be applied by wet mop, automatic scrubber, or other means*.
- Remove any excess diluted ARMOUR Concrete Cleaner & Conditioner and allow the concrete surface to air-dry.
- Periodically burnish or buff the surface with a non-aggressive pad or polishing pad.
*To avoid streaking, use only a rayon mop head and change the cleaning solution every 800-1,000 square feet (244-305 square meters).
